What Should Carnivores Eat?
Proper nutrition is vital to good health. In nature, it is live foods that truly nourish both people and animals. If your pets are to thrive, they need live enzymes, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and unadulterated amino acids, vitamins and minerals that only raw food can provide. Commercial dry and canned pet foods are convenient, but they are also highly processed with heat, which destroys many of these essential nutrients. Questionable pet foods may sustain life, but unlike raw diets, they do not contain the life-enhancing nutrition that promotes good health.Cats and dogs are carnivores; meat eaters. Yet all dry pet foods are at least 60% grain. Grain is needed to ‘bind’ the foodtogether in the process of making the kibble. But, as the veterinary manuals tell us, dogs and cats have ‘no dietary requirement for carbohydrates’. Does it make sense to feed our carnivores a diet that contains at least 60% of a substances they don’t need? In addition, grains are metabolized by the body into glucose (sugar), which is known to feed cancers, promote diabetes, and other disorders that plague our pets. When a wolf (carnivore) eats a rabbit (herbivore), the wolf eats meat, bone, some organ meats and some green vegetation contained in the rabbit’s stomach. That is nature’s perfect meal – the meal or raw diet simulates.
Any sudden changes in your pet’s diet can disrupt their digestive system. However, a gradual change over 14 days is best because it allows your pet’s system to adjust comfortably without upset. Many pets transition in a shorter period of time. Some will quickly refuse to continue to eat their usual kibble. In this case, they can be changed over to raw immediately. If you gradually follow the 14-day plan below your pet should have an easy transition to a raw diet.
DAYS 1-5 75% of the present food in the morning and 25% of the raw mix at night.
DAYS 6-10 50% of the present food in the morning and 50% of the raw mix at night.
DAYS 10-14 25% of the present food in the morning and 75% of the raw mix at night.
Start adding a raw meaty bone (chicken or turkey neck, chicken back or frame) in the morning. After day 14 continue feeding the raw meaty bones in the morning. This massages the gums, flosses the teeth, and helps the digestive system work properly, leading the way for maximum absorption of the nutrients from the evening meal of mixes.Raw food is approximately 70% moisture so your pet will be more naturally hydrated and will drink less than normal. Some pets initially refuse to eat raw, due to prolonged exposure to the salts, sugars and preservatives in the dry diet. If your pet has this issue, please, call us for a solution.Remember that every breed is different and some may need to detoxify from over processed dry food they have previously eaten. Do not be alarmed if they have a slightly loose or mucous covered stools. This indicates that detoxification is taking place.
